Built in 1909 in Edwardian Baroque Style architecture the building features an early innovative steel frame designed to resist earthquakes and is possibly the only surviving large building built from true New Zealand granite (Tonga Bay granite). It is currently occupied by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
