Market Reserve Building

- Art Deco -

- Architect Aleck Natusch of Natusch & Sons -

As the first major building constructed after the 1931 Earthquake, it was considered as the Renaissance of Napier. Plans had been drawn up in July 1930 but funds were hard to raise and construction was delayed until after December 1930. After the Earthquake in February building regulations were changed but they found Natusch’s structure of steel frame did not require modification and allowed for the large arch windows that are a dominant feature of the building. In acknowledgement of the significance of the construction, the English manufacturers, Crittalls, gifted bronze windows for the price of steel. It also featured the first suspended verandah which allowed for the streets to be clear of obstruction. Completed in 1932 for the use of retail and offices, it once housed the Napier Public Library. Currently it is occupied by the Tennyson Cafe with the Tennyson Gallery at the centre of the building.
