- Architect JA Louis Hay -

In 1925 tobacco tycoon Gerhard Husheer commissioned Louis Hay to design his factory. Suffering extensive exterior damage in the 1931 Earthquake, he again commissioned Hay to redesign the building in the Art Deco style. It was completed in 1932. After Husheer’s death in 1954 it was acquired by Rothmans of Pall Mall in 1957 and was known as the ‘Rothmans Building’ from 1956 - 2001. It has since been repainted to its original colours and renamed the National Tobacco Company Building. It is currently home to the The National Distillery Company.
