The hotel was first built in 1874. Destroyed by the 1931 Earthquake it was rebuilt in 1932. Williams incorporated Spanish Mission style with Art Deco influences. It is backed by the Market Reserve Building (currently occupied by Tennyson Gallery) so the entire section to Tennyson Street flows together with the use of arched windows used by the Associated Architects. It is currently a Backpackers with shops on ground level.
